Jesus will return. That is what will be. You are preparing yourselves for what will be by listening to His Word. He draws you to Himself through it. He prepares you to be confident when you see signs that would otherwise be terrifying. He prepares you, through His Words that never pass away, to stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.

To do otherwise than to pray for daily bread would be to indicate that God owes us daily bread (or that somehow we provide it for ourselves, without His help). To do otherwise than to pray for daily bread would be to indicate that we are entitled, and that God couldn’t at any moment remove from us what He so graciously gives. It would be entirely unacceptable for us not to pray for daily bread, and to give thanks having received it.

The LORD God Who created heaven and earth has come near to us by means of cross and grave so that our self-made distance from Him didn’t need to be eternal distance. He comes near to us in Word and Sacrament this morning with forgiveness and blessing in hand. He builds us up in faith through these means, fortifying us to endure unto eternal life.
